The Patent Baron

Project Overview:
Students will collaborate with The Patent Baron, a patent law firm specializing in intellectual property and innovation, on projects at the intersection of healthcare, technology, and law. Team members will conduct public prior-art research, analyze technology landscapes, compare patent references, and explore strategies that help strengthen intellectual property services for healthcare innovators and early-stage startups.

What Students Will Do:​

  • Conduct technical background and public prior-art research on medical technologies.

  • Prepare technology and prior-art landscape analyses.

  • Compare patent references and summarize key findings through memorandums

  • Research intellectual property trends within healthcare and medical innovation.

  • Contribute strategic recommendations to support innovation and patent-related initiatives.

Williamson Health Law

Project Overview: 

Students will collaborate with Williamson Health Law to explore legal and policy issues at the intersection of healthcare, regulation, and patient advocacy. Through this project, students will conduct legal and policy research on emerging healthcare questions involving patient rights, healthcare compliance, scope of practice, privacy regulations, and healthcare policy.

What Students Will Do:

  • Research healthcare laws, regulations, and legal frameworks affecting providers and patients.

  • Analyze questions related to informed consent, patient rights, and healthcare access.

  • Investigate healthcare compliance topics, including HIPAA and privacy considerations.

  • Research scope-of-practice regulations for healthcare professionals.

  • Examine healthcare policy issues involving insurance, Medicaid, and public health regulations.

  • Prepare summaries and research briefs to support legal analysis and healthcare decision-making.

Interdisciplinary Project: Community Action Network (CAN)

Project Overview:

Students will lead an interactive, in-person workshop that introduces participants to the process of developing and evaluating public policy. Working in small groups, participants will tackle real-world healthcare and campus issues, consider different stakeholder perspectives and legal limitations, and develop and present their own policy solutions.

What Students Will Do:

  • Introduce students to the fundamentals of policy development and decision-making.

  • Guide participants through a structured policy development framework.

  • Facilitate small-group discussions around real-world healthcare and campus issues.

  • Help students identify key stakeholders and consider legal and practical limitations.

  • Guide groups in developing and presenting their own policy proposals.

  • Facilitate feedback and discussion following each policy pitch.
